Harmon Computer Commons

The Harmon Computer Commons is a fully networked electronic environment, whose 300 workstations have access to informational resources, productivity tools, group work areas and teaching labs.  These resources are designed to fully integrate the informational resources of the library with the technology acquired, disseminated and utilized by the University of Central Missouri community.  Four multipurpose class spaces are connected to the commons area, and contain computers for instruction in an hands-on environment.  HCC offers the following services and facilities:

Services:

  • Help is available from the HCC staff and student workers when the lab is open   Ask one of the people in the green vests for help when you need it.  Appointments may be made for detailed problems and non-credit courses are available.
  • Workshops are conducted throughout the semester on many software packages available in the HCC, including the Microsoft Office suite, web development applications, and the effective use of informational resources.  Reservations cam be made through Central Missouri's training calendar, and faculty, staff, students and members of the Warrensburg Community are welcome to attend.
  • Reservations for the hands-on classrooms can be made for teaching faculty by contacting the HCC staff at 543-4196.

Facilities:

  • Open Lab: 90 PC and 20 Mac workstations are connected to the campus network.  8 of these (4 PC and 4 Mac) are attached to scanners.  All workstations contain a variety of productivity software packages, and the scanning stations all have PhotoShop, several graphic applications and web development tools.  All are available in the Commons area on a first-come first-serve basis to those having a valid UCM login.
  • Accessibility Workstations are available in the open lab, and each of the two larger classrooms. Please ask for assistance if you have difficulty either locating the terminals or using the software.
  • Classrooms can be reserved by teaching faculty for instruction in a hands-on environment.  There are 2 classrooms with 31 PC workstations, and one with 15 PC workstations. One classroom has video-conferencing capabilities and contains 5 Mac and 10PC workstations. Each classroom has a teaching station [computer, overhead [ELMO], VCR, audio, and a projection system.
  • Information Central consists of a dozen workstations where teaching faculty can quickly install course related software and patrons can access special software [course specific software, dictionaries, encyclopedias] as well as have access to CD-ROM databases and internet resources.  These provide access to full text resources, indexes, style guides, and tutorials.  Basic print resources are available as well.
  • Printing: Laser printing is available from any of the computers in the open lab or classrooms at .10 per page.
  • Transparencies can be made for .40 per page.
