Refworks

Refworks is a powerful tool that allows you to store citations in a personal database. The citations can be input by hand or downloaded directly from the library's databases. You can then export citations directly into a paper you are writing, creating both in text citations and a bibliography in many citation formats, including MLA, APA, and Chicago.

Citations are stored remotely and can be accessed from any computer connected to the Internet. You need to create a login ID and password to set up an account. If you are creating an account from off campus, you will need our subscriber group code, which is kirkpatrick.

RefWorks works hard to make it as easy as possible for users to get their information into RefWorks.  The easiest method is direct export from a library database.  When you see "Direct Export to RefWorks" as one option to save your information, it is an indication that transferring your information to RefWorks will be quick and easy.  A list of direct export partners is available here.

If your database does not have a direct export option, you must use an import filter.  Instructions for using an import filter may be found here.

If you are using a book or article that was not located using a library database, you may enter a citation manually. Under the “References” drop-down menu, click on “Add New Reference” and enter the information describing the item.

Remember that RefWorks allows you to organize your citations into folders.  It is usually helpful to create a folder for each topic.  It is quick and easy to create bibliographies (lists of materials) from the references in your folders.  You may choose from various styles, such as APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.  (Remember to double-check the bibliography, however; Refworks makes mistakes, and it is your responsibility to ensure the accuracy of information in your bibliography.)

To import citations from the JCKL catalog, Quest, follow these instructions
