Resources for School Health Educators:

American School Health Association:    for those interested in the health of school-aged children. The Association is a multidisciplinary organization of administrators, counselors, health educators, physical educators, school nurses, and school physicians.

Health Education Professional Resources
Developed by New York University for health educators to facilitate access to information useful for professional practice.

National Center for Health Education
Non-profit organization which develops and disseminates health education information and curricula.

School Health Resource Service
Access to resources needed to implement or improve school health programs.

WebMD- Health Teacher section
WebMD is a comprehensive site developed to provide up-to-date information for consumers and health care professionals.  The "Health Teacher" section provides lesson plans and resources appropriate for K-12 health instruction.

General Sites:

MEDLINEplus
The National Library of Medicine provides this health information site.  Includes links to many health sites as well as a medical dictionary and a medical encyclopedia.  A "Drug Information" section describes over 9,000 prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

National Library of Medicine
This is a wonderful resource for health information that provides access to millions of MEDLINE citations and some full text articles.

WebMD- Health Section
WebMD is a comprehensive site developed to provide access to up-to-date information for consumers and health care professionals.  Consumers are directed to the WebMD/Health section.  Of particular interest:  the "Newly Diagnosed" category, which offers brief articles on health topics.

Mental Health:

American Psychological Association Help Center
Practical advice on coping mechanisms and finding a psychologist.

The Center for Mental Health Services

National Institute of Mental Health
Click on "for the public" for information on mental illnesses and disorders.

Substance Abuse:

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Conducts and supports research on the causes, consequences, and treatment of alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

National Institute on Drug Abuse
Provides leadership in research on drug abuse and drug addiction, as well as the dissemination of information on these topics.  Their web site contains links to information and features of interest to Researchers and Health Professionals, Parents and Teachers, and Students and is organized under these headings.

SAMHSA
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  SAMHSA is charged with improving the quality and availability of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitative services for substance abuse and mental illness.  Good source of statistics on these topics.

Nutrition and Fitness:

Food and Nutrition Information Center
One of several information centers at the National Agricultural Library (NAL), part of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Research Service.  You can access resource lists, databases, and many other food and nutrition-related links from this award-winning site.

The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability

Sexuality:

Sex, etc.
Web-based newsletter for teens, published by Rutger's Network for Family Life Education.  Focus on healthy sexuality.

SIECUS:  Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S.  Non-profit organization dedicated to developing and disseminating information about healthy sexuality.
