As speaker of the 9th Annual National Dropout Prevention Network Conference, held November 8-10 in New Orleans, Larry Dorrell discussed effective instructional strategies for students at risk. Dorrell also presented a program titled "Ten Rules for Effective Instruction of Under Prepared Students," for the Kansas City Professional Development Council, September 1997.

Linda Medaris and Mark Manley co-authored an article, "Building a Better Mousetrap: Networking with Community Business Resources" which appears in "The Reference Librarian," No. 58, 1997.

John Small, Steve Potter, and Jim Martin presented "Computer Security and Libraries: Issues Large and Small" at the Missouri Library Association's 97th Annual Conference, October 10, 1997. John also presented "On the Use of a WWW Based Asynchronous Discussion Program to Facilitate Distance Learning Courses" at the Kansas City Professional Development Center's Enhancing Teaching and Learning Program, September 13, 1997.

Carrie Clothier, along with the rest of the Kansas City Chorus of Sweet Adelines, sang her way to a third place finish at the International Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah October 17, 18. There were 28 choruses competing, each having won at the regional competition level. CONGRATULATIONS Carrie!

"I've got a Secret: The Reference Interview" was the title of a presentation given by Nancy Littlejohn, Mary Tygett, Barbara Wales, and Stephen Walker at the November 5th Kansas City Metropolitan Libraries Information Network, Choices and Challenges Workshop in Independence.
